Abstract

Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted archaeological resource survey and evaluation along the proposed widening and reconstruction corridor of State Route (SR) 72 in Clarke and Madison Counties, Georgia. Project goals included location and evaluation of all archaeological resources which might be impacted by proposed construction activities, and recommendations for avoidance or other mitigation options. Historical and archaeological research consisted of examination of relevant archival resources and field survey. Field survey involved pedestrian coverage of the entire length of the project corridor, approximately 9.5 miles. Screened shovel testing and visual inspection of exposed ground surfaces were the primary methods used to locate and evaluate archaeological resources encountered. These investigations involved the identification and evaluation of three archaeological sites and five isolated finds. It is recommended that none of these archaeological resources is significant (i.e., either listed, eligible, or potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places). Past agricultural land use practices, previous highway construction, and erosional processes have severely impacted the sites (and isolated finds), leaving them with poor integrity. Based on the findings of this cultural resources survey, it is recommended that the proposed widening and reconstruction of State Road 72 be given archaeological resources clearance to proceed.
