Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a Jackson County housing development proposed by Affordable Housing Solutions, Inc. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Historic Preservation Division (HPD) requested that the tract of land on which the development will occur (about 55 acres) be investigated for archeological sites.

Intensive archeological survey by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. found five prehistoric sites in the project area, most of which is steeply sloping or eroded ridge tops or inundated floodplain of the Middle Oconee River. Located sites include three lithic scatters of unknown age (9JK223, 9JK224, and 9JK226), a sparse lithic scatter that may date to the Late Archaic period (9JK227), and a quartz quarry/workshop site (9JK225) of unknown age. All of the lithic scatters have been recommended as ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) because of poor preservation and sparse deposits. The eligibility of site 9JK225 remains unknown, because the site has the potential to contain significant archeological deposits. We recommend that site 9JK225 be avoided or, if avoidance is not possible, evaluated through archeological testing to determine its NRHP eligibility status.
