Abstract

The Georgia Transmission Corporation wishes to enhance the existing Nancy Hart 46/12 kV substation in central Hart County. The substation was built in the early 1990s and is located on a 3.44 ac (1.4 ha) tract of land that also contains two transmission lines. The substation tract was archeologically surveyed in 1991 and one of the transmission line towers on the tract was archeologically surveyed in 2011. No archeological sites were located in either survey, but the 1991 survey documented a standing 1950s house that was recommended as not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Because Georgia Transmission Corporation did not have access to the 1991 survey report and because that survey was conducted so long ago, they requested that Southeastern Archeological Services conduct a survey of the tract. This was done on November 5, 2015. The former standing house had been razed to make way for the substation, and a large part of the tract had been graded for the existing substation and access driveway. Five shovel tests were excavated in relatively undisturbed areas and no sites were detected. We conclude that there are no archeological resources eligible for the National Register of Historic Places within the area of potential effect for this project. It is the recommendation of the Principal Investigator that, in regard to archeological resources, the project be granted clearance to proceed.
