Abstract

The area where transmission line structure (# 48) is to be relocated was archeologically surveyed on August 21, 2007 by Chad O. Braley of Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. The goal of the survey was to determine if any significant archeological sites (those eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places) were present that might be adversely affected by the project. One previously recorded archeological site, 9FY4, was found. This is a large, multicomponent prehistoric site that occupies much of a large alluvial terrace overlooking the Flint River. At the time of the survey the field conditions were poor, resulting in the recovery of only a few artifacts. Yet, there is enough previous documentation to indicate that 9FY4 is a potentially significant site. We recommend that the area where the new structure is to be built be archeologically tested to determine if this specific area contributes to the eligibility of the site. We recommend that two 1 x 2 m units be excavated.
