Abstract

Gwinnett County is proposing to construct a hard surface multi-use trail along the east side of a 0.80 km length of Rogers Bridge Road, in western Gwinnett County. This proposed project may use federal highway funds (Transportation Enhancement Activities funds) and thus an archeological survey was required to ensure that significant sites (i.e., those eligible to the National Register of Historic Places) are not adversely affected. The trail on Rogers Bridge Road will be constructed on the east side of the existing road. It will be 1.5 to 3.0 m (5 to 10 ft) wide, with all construction to take place within the existing 24 m (80 ft) highway right-of-way, that is, extending out 12m (40ft) from the centerline of the road. The project area was archeologically surveyed by the author on June 6, 2000. Much of the southern half of the project area is completely disturbed by cutting for highway construction and by landscaping associated with adjoining housing developments. Most of the northern half of the project area lies within the floodplain of the Chattahoochee River.

The Georgia Archeological Site Files was examined to learn of known sites within this project area. A cluster of 24 sites is recorded around Rogers Bridge Road, but only two, both on the west side of the road, are near the project area. Neither extend into the project area on the east side of the road. We examined surface exposures and excavated nine shovel tests in the project area to detect archeological sites, and failed to detect any cultural resources. Our survey detected no archeological sites within the project's area of potential effect. We conclude that the project will have no adverse effect on significant cultural resources.
