Abstract

Our archeological consulting firm was contacted by Mr. Al Lawson, Swainsboro city administrator, regarding a ca. 3.5 acre parcel o fland in the town that will be a nature park with a trail. The town is applying for a grant for the trail system and.the Historic Preservation Division requested that a Phase I archeological survey be conducted. We began that survey by conducting archival research into historic period use of the tract and patterns of prehistoric site location in Emanuel County. Having conducted six surveys in the county, three of which (U.S. Highway 1 widening, Grande Creek Road widening and West Swainsboro Bypass) each recorded ten to twelve sites, our firm is familiar with where prehistoric sites tend to be located. We conclude from our archival research that there is a very low chance of archeological sites occurring on the subject tract. We recommend that no further work, such as a field survey, is needed.

The subject tract is about 3.5 ac in size, is irregularly shaped and fronts on West Main Street (U.S. Highway 80) to the north and Tyson (or Old Nuney) Road to the west. The tract does not extend east to Cain Street, and thus does not include an old house that stands on the comer of Main Street and Cain Street. The tract occupies low lying land that is near the head of a shallow drainage.
