Abstract

The area where transmission line structure(# 141) is to be relocated and a 1,800 ft long access road to it were archeologically surveyed on August 16, 2007 by Thomas H. Gresham of Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. The goal of the survey was to ensure that significant archeological sites (those eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places) would not be adversely affected by the project. One archeological site, 9LS265, was found in the route of the access road. This is a large, sparse, deeply buried prehistoric lithic scatter. Such lithic scatters are common in Laurens County. We recommend that site 9LS265 is not eligible for listing in the National Register because it is unlikely to yield important, new information on the prehistory of the area. Also, because the site occurs in a plowed field and an existing plowed wildlife food plot, the construction of the proposed access road will not adversely affect the site. We recommend that the project be given clearance to proceed.
