Abstract

Between June 28 and July 1, 2004, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. conducted a Phase I archeological survey of approximately 29 acres of a proposed development called Sanctuary Cove at St. Andrews Sound, located on the Little Satilla River in the extreme northeastern portion of Camden County, Georgia (Figure 1). Sanctuary Cove at St. Andrews Sound will be a 775 acre golf community consisting of approximately 700 houses, a marina, water treatment facilities, and an 18 hole golf course. The survey was conducted to ensure that the project is in compliance with Federal regulations concerning the development 29 acres of wetlands along the Little Satilla River and a small hammock in the nearby salt marsh. It is anticipated that a 404 permit will be required from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in order to develop these tracts . The marsh hammock, also known as Hogans Island, is the largest of the survey areas, containing 19 acres. The marina tract, located adjacent to Interstate 95 , totals about 6.2 acres. Along the low riverbank fronting the Little Satilla River approximately 875 feet of rip-rap and vinyl revetment will be installed, so this area was archeologically surveyed. Finally, we surveyed the proposed right-of-way of a road leading to the hammock, and two small bridges that will cross a tidal stream separating the hammock from the mainland. No archeological sites or isolated artifacts were found.
