Abstract

In November 1994, Garrow & Associates, Inc., conducted Phase I cultural resources survey of an 80-foot wide, seven-mile long road widening corridor along Smyrna, Ebenezer, and Stanton roads, in Rockdale County, Georgia. The corridor extended from just south of Interstate 20 to Honey Creek Road. This corridor subsequently was divided into five Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) projects: STP-2173(1) 742820, STP-9355(3) 752330, STP-9355(1) 752350, STP-9355(2) 752340, and STP-9338(3) 752410. The only archaeological discovery was an isolated find consisting of a single piece of chert debitage in STP-2173(1) 742820. No archaeological sites were encountered in any of the five GDOT project areas. It is the opinion of Garrow & Associates, Inc., that no significant archaeological resources will be adversely impacted by the proposed road widening in any of these five project areas. On November 11 and 15, 1994, the historic structures component of the investigation was conducted. Two previously identified historical properties and one previously unidentified historical property were found to be in the area of potential effect for GDOT Projects STP-9355(3) 752330, STP-9355(2) 752340, and STP-9338(3) 752410; all three properties are potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Garrow & Associates, Inc., originally recommended that the road widening be shifted away from these properties to avoid creating an adverse effect. However, because the proposed road widening projects will take place entirely within the existing right-of-ways, whose boundaries will not change, there will be no adverse effect to these three historic properties.
