An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted at Florence Marina State Park from 10 to 20 April 1990. The park is jointly owned by the Mobile District, Corps of Engineers and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources but is operated by the State. The survey investigated two previously known sites and discovered three new sites. The known sites include a large, stratified, multicomponent aboriginal (prehistoric and historic) site (9Sw49) and a large multicomponent site (9Sw124) that was the location of a frontier town, Creek Indian household(s), and prehistoric Indian occupation. The newly discovered sites (9Sw135-137) are small and have very low artifact densities or have been heavily disturbed. The report recommends that the Georgia Department of Natural Resources nominate both 9Sw49 and 9Sw124 to the National Register of Historic Places. Also recommended is a program of salvage archeological excavations and bank stabilization at 9Sw49 to mitigate impacts to the site's integrity.
