Abstract

On the afternoon of March 23, 2000, I visited the cemetery with an assistant. It was immediately clear that it was definitely a cemetery, as there were numerous east-west oriented linear depressions with field stones at west and east ends of many of the graves. It also became immediately clear that it was larger than originally plotted. We first compared the layout of the most obvious row of graves to the plat map and oriented the plat map to actual field conditions. We then used a 1-rn long solid metal probe to probe at 1-ft intervals south from the south most grave in order to detect other graves in the row that might have missed by the surveyor. We detected no graves further south than the graves plotted by the surveyor. We then examined the area immediately west of the well-defined row of graves, and noted here an old road bed that runs about 20 degrees west of north. It appears that this road bed forms the western boundary of top cemetery. We conducted some probing in this road bed and detected no graves.
