Abstract

Two abandoned cemeteries are located on Engelhard Corporation's property immediately northwest of the McIntyre city limits (Figure 1). Both are adjacent to a settling pond that is associated with the processing of kaolin. Engelhard is studying the logistics of increasing the capacity of the pond by raising the dam a few feet, which could impact the cemeteries. Therefore, Engelhard is also considering if it is feasible to relocate the graves.

The fieldwork was conducted on May 3, 2000. Investigations began at Cemetery No. 2, which is easiest to access. This cemetery is enclosed by a chain link fence measuring 70 x 80 ft and contains two headstones, one inscribed "D.L. Filley, Oct. 24, 1866 - Feb. 20, 1936," and the other "John Collins, died Aug 15, 1924." In addition, an unmarked linear depression is located next to Filley's tombstone. Thus, from observable evidence, there appears to be a minimum of three graves in this cemetery (Figure 2).
