I-16-1(75) Chatham County, Savannah & Ogeechee Canal

Report Number

Abstract

An archaeological survey has been performed along the proposed route of 1-16-1(75). This pedestrian survey included subsurface shovel tests along the project right- of-way. The Savannah and Ogeechee Canal was also included in this survey. No sites were located as a result of the survey. However, it should be noted that because of references to a towpath and the possibility of debris from Canal traffic deposited in the Canal bottom, there is potential for further archaeological study along the length of the Canal. The Savannah and Ogeechee Canal was the first waterway constructed in the State of Georgia. Although it is not in a good state of preservation, its location can still be identified in the portion discussed in this document. Because of the Canal ' s historic significance, it is the opinion of the Federal Highway Administration that the portion of the Canal discussed in this document is eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
