Abstract

In 2005, GDOT acquired a 6.68-acre (2.70-hectare [ha]) parcel along Macon Road immediately southwest of the city of Griffin in Spalding County as a potential wetland mitigation site. The parcel (Spalding County Parcel 130 05005) was acquired as part of GDOT P.I. 351220, a federally funded intersection improvement that realigned East College Street at that road's intersection with Macon Road and Futral Road. Following the roadway realignment, the parcel was divided into two smaller parcels located to the north and south of East College Street (Figure 1). Ultimately, the southern 4.69-ac (1.90-ha) parcel was selected as the site of all stream restoration activities conducted as part of the P.I. 351220 mitigation. Grape Creek was mitigated as a part of these restoration activities.

In 2018, GDOT archaeologists conducted a Phase I archaeological survey to determine whether any archaeological resources were present within the mitigation site in preparation for the future transfer of the parcel.
