Abstract

Fort Valley State University (FVSU) plans to make improvements within 8.7 acres of the campus, located in Peach County, Georgia. Specifically, the project will involve the demolition of six buildings and the creation of green space. New South Associates, Inc. (New South), conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of the project's direct area of potential effect (APE), which included areas around and between the six buildings slated for demolition. The objectives the Phase I survey were to determine if the APE contained significant archaeological resources that could be affected by the planned undertaking. A background literature review and records search was conducted using Georgia's Natural, Archaeological, and Historic Resources Geographic Information System (GNAHRGIS) online database, which contains information on previously recorded archaeological sites and historic resources. The literature review indicated that the APE did not contain any previously identified archaeological sites and no prior surveys were inside it. The Phase I Survey identified of one historic archaeological site (9PE50) and two multicomponent sites (9PE49 and 9PE51). Based on a lack of data potential, sites 9PE49, 9PE50, and 9PE51 are recommended not eligible for inclusion the NRHP.
