Addendum to a Phase I Archaeological Resources Survey of the CR 742/Bass Road Bridge Replacement Over the Norfolk Southern Railroad, Bibb County, Georgia

Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Project PI No. 0014896 would replace the bridge on County Road (CR) 742/Bass Road over the Norfolk-Southern Railroad in Bibb County, Georgia (Figure 1). The structure was constructed in 1938 and is located approximately two miles west of the City of Macon. The concrete structure has a 21-foot 10-inch clearance under the structure for the railroad beneath. The existing typical section along the roadway consists of one 12-foot travel lane in each direction, and 6-foot outside shoulders. The existing right-of-way (ROW) is 50 feet (ft) (15.24 meters [m]) in either direction from the Bass Road centerline. The proposed ROW would vary up to 200 total ft (61 m), or 100 ft (30.48 m) in either direction from the Bass Road centerline. The original survey for this project was conducted by VHB in 2018 (Pappas and Blank 2018) (Figure 2).

Since the original survey in 2018 the proposed project has undergone a series of design modifications. These design modifications include (refer to Figures 3 and 4):

1. Additional grading and ditch installation would be developed parallel to the railbed to facilitate drainage flows.

2. A longitudinal ditch and riprap would be added parallel to the roadway to the southwest of the bridge.

3. A new easement for the construction and maintenance of bridge and utilities would be added underneath the bridge within the existing Norfolk Southern railroad easement.

4. A temporary easement would be added along the entirety of the railroad corridor which is an easement

by railroad agreement.

Required ROW and easements, both temporary and permanent, would total approximately 3.24 acres. All recently proposed design modifications within the Norfolk Southern easement have been previously coordinated and agreed to by Norfolk Southern, and designed per their comments.
