Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) proposes to widen State Route (SR) 81 from two lanes to four lanes for 3.02 miles between Lemon Street and Bethany Road in the City of McDonough. The proposed project would begin approximately 0.15 mile east of Lemon Street and would end approximately 0.20 mile east of Bethany Road (Figure 1). In addition to widening the existing facility, the proposed undertaking would include pedestrian facilities, a shared-used path, and intersection improvements, which include a multi-lane roundabout. The proposed typical section would consist of two 11-foot travel lanes in each direction, separated by a 20-foot median. The project would include 16-foot shoulders (4.5 feet to 6.5 feet paved) along the eastbound lanes, with 5-foot sidewalks and curb and gutter. The westbound lanes would include a 19-foot shoulder with a 10-foot shared-use path and curb and gutter. The existing right-of-way (ROW) of SR 81 is 100 feet, and the proposed ROW would vary between 150 feet and 240 feet.
