Abstract

Through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) partners with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in facilitating and providing an opportunity for local governments to pursue non-traditional transportation-related activities such as pedestrian facilities, bicycle facilities, and pedestrian streetscaping projects. 

The length of the proposed project would be approximately 4,550 feet (ft) and would include the construction of five-foot-wide concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter, drainage improvements and a pedestrian bridge along the east side of US 19/SR 9/SR 52/SR 60/Morrison Moore Parkway, as well as bike shared lane markings on the existing roadway in both travel directions.

The proposed sidewalk improvement project is in the town of Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, Georgia (Figure 1). The project consists of constructing five-foot-wide concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter, drainage improvements and a pedestrian bridge along the east side of US 19/SR 9/SR 52/SR 60/Morrison Moore Parkway, as well as bike shared lane markings on the existing roadway in both travel directions. The existing right of way (ROW) is 93 ft. The project would begin at the intersection of US 19/ SR 9/SR 52/SR 60/Morrison Moore Parkway with US 19 Bus/SR 60 Bus/East Main Street and Consolidated Gold Mine Road. It would proceed northward along US 19/SR 9/SR 52/SR 60/Morrison Moore Parkway to a Lake Zwerner parking area approximately 750 ft north of Yahoola Creek. An approximately 220-foot-long pedestrian bridge would be constructed across Yahoola Creek. The total length of these improvements would be approximately 4,550 ft. The existing travel lane widths would remain as is. Along the project corridor, the speed limit varies from 35 to 45 miles per hour. No additional Right-of-Way is currently anticipated for the construction of this project.
