Abstract

The proposed project is located in Macon, Georgia and would consist of converting the signal-controlled intersection of State Route (SR) 247/United States Highway (US) 41/Pio Nono Avenue (henceforth referred to as SR 247/Pio Nono Avenue) at County Road (CR) 5104/CR 5481/Anthony Road (henceforth referred to as CR 5104/Anthony Road) into 4-legged, single-lane roundabout. The proposed roundabout would have an inscribed diameter of approximately 39.6 meters (m) (130 feet [ft]), a 6.1 m (20 ft) wide travel lane within the roundabout, and approach lanes that vary between 3.7 and 6.1 m (12 and 20 ft) in width. The existing right-of-way (ROW) widths vary from approximately 22 to 26.8 m (72 to 88 ft) on SR 247/Pio Nono Avenue and from approximately 15.2 to 22.9 m (50 to 75 ft) on CR 5104/Anthony Road. The proposed roundabout would include the construction of 1.5 m (5 ft) wide sidewalks, pedestrian ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and pedestrian crosswalks across each leg of the intersection. It is anticipated that new ROW would likely be required from each quadrant of the intersection; however, required ROW amounts are unknown at this time.

SR 247/Pio Nono Avenue is classified as a minor arterial that travels north-south. At its intersection with CR 5104/Anthony Road, SR 247/Pio Nono Avenue consists of four through lanes, a designated left-turn-lane for each approach, a designated right-turn-lane for the southbound vehicles accessing westbound CR 5104/Anthony Road, and a designated right-turn-lane for southbound vehicles accessing the retail establishment located on the southwest quadrant of the intersection. The posted speed limit on SR 247/Pio Nono Avenue is 35 miles per hour (MPH) (56.3 kilometers per hour [KPH]). Presently, 1.5 m (5 ft) wide sidewalks are located on both sides of SR 247/Pio Nono Avenue. The existing ROW along SR 247/Pio Nono Avenue ranges in width from 13.7 to 25.9 m (45 to 85 ft).

CR 5104/Anthony Road is classified as a minor arterial that travels east-west and consists of four lanes. At its intersection with SR 247/Pio Nono Avenue, the eastbound approach of CR 5104/Anthony Road consists of one designated left-turn-lane and one shared right-turn/through-lane. The westbound approach consists of one designated left-turn-lane, one through lane, and one designated right-turn-lane. The posted speed limit on CR 5104/Anthony Road is 35 MPH (56.3 KPH). Presently, 1.5 m (5 ft) wide sidewalks are located on both sides of CR 5104/Anthony Road. The existing ROW along CR 5104/Anthony Road ranges in width from 50.2 to 24.4 m (50 to 80 ft).
