On June 26, 2020, R.S. Webb & Associates (RSWA) conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of Settingdown Creek Dam No. 6 and associated areas of improvement covering approximately 7.5 hectares (18.5 acres). The project area is located west of the intersection of Georgia Highway 400 and Bottoms Road, and east of Hopewell Road in northern Forsyth County, Georgia (Figure 1. 1).
Physically, the project area straddles a tributary to Settingdown Creek and encompasses floodplains, s de slopes and the ends of ridge spurs to the east, west and south of Dam No. 6. The dam site is currently open/grassed, with areas north and northeast of the dam being wooded.
The proposed project includes making multiple improvements to the earthen dam and its various components. Based on the nature of the project, the project Area of Potential Effects (APE) for direct and indirect impacts were set at the limits of the project area.
Mr. Steve Webb served as Principal Investigator and authored the report. The literature and records search was performed by Mr. Neil Bowen. The field survey was conducted by Mr. Doug Tilley. Report graphics were prepared by Ms. Jan Parrish-Jordan and Mr. Christopher Webb. Ms. Parrish-Jordan provided editorial assistance and produced the report.
Upon agency approval of this report, a copy of the report will be submitted to the Georgia Archaeological Site File/Laboratory of Archaeology, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. This facility meets the criteria specified in 36 CFR Part 79, regarding the curation of federally-owned or administrated collections.
