Abstract

Subterranean Consultants (STC) conducted an intensive cultural resources assessment of the proposed Medical Office Building location on March 17, 2021. The project area is in central Gilmer County 4.4 km (2.7 mi) south of Ellijay, Georgia. The cultural assessment was conducted for Terracon Consultants, Inc., on behalf of Georgia Mountain Health Services, Inc., to locate and identify archaeological or architectural resources and to assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria (36CFR Part 60.4 [a-d]). In accordance with any permitting or funding process, survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended.

The cultural assessment included a literature review and intensive field survey. During the literature review, which took place on March 15, 2021, state and county maps and documents were examined to determine if previously recorded archaeological resources are in the project area. The field survey was conducted using surface and subsurface techniques (i.e., visual inspection and shovel testing) to locate and identify archaeological resources within the direct effects aera of potential effects (APE). Previously recorded architectural resources were checked immediately adjacent to the proposed direct effects APE.
