Abstract

The proposed project would consist of widening and reconstructing North 2nd Avenue/State Route (SR) 101 in Rome, Georgia. The project would begin at the Oostanuala River Bridge just south of West 3rd Street and would end 650 feet along Martha Berry Boulevard. North 2nd Avenue/SR 101 currently consists of four, 10- to 13-foot lanes (two in each direction) with curb and gutter and 5-foot sidewalks on the east side of the roadway. The proposed improvements would include four 11-foot lanes (two in each direction) separated by a 19-foot-wide raised median, and 12-foot-wide shoulders with curb and gutter and 5-foot sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. Left and right turn lanes would be added at intersections where warranted. The “Y” intersection at Turner McCall Boulevard and West 6th Street would be removed, and all traffic would be routed to a four-leg intersection at North 2nd Avenue/SR 101 and Turner McCall Boulevard. Traffic would be maintained during construction. Existing right-of-way (ROW) varies from 52 to 60 feet. Proposed ROW would vary between 100 to 124 feet.

The project was originally surveyed in 2008 for archaeological resources by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) (Lotti 2008). Driveway and slope maintenance easements were added to the project and were captured in a reevaluation survey completed in June 2011 (Lotti 2011). Since that time, additional refinements to easement have been made that extended outside of previous survey coverage.
