An Archaeological Survey of a Portion of J. Strom Thurmond Reservoir Affected by Georgia Department of Transportation Project BRSLB-1820(3), Lincoln County, Georgia

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended thereto, GDOT Project BRSLB-1820(3), Lincoln County, was surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The Department of Transportation proposes to replace and widen the narrow and structurally deficient bridge on CR 262 (Woodlawn Road) over Lloyd Creek, approximately 11.26 km (7 mi) southwest of Lincolnton. The total length of the project would be approximately 0.32 km (0.20 mi) and would involve a portion of the J. Strom Thurmond Reservoir. An archaeological survey of the segment affecting portions of the J. Strom Thurmond Reservoir was required under the provisions of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. A permit to conduct the survey was acquired on 23 February 1996 (ARPA Permit No. DACW21-4-96-0926). The archaeological survey was conducted on 26 March 1996. The archaeological survey consisted of intensive pedestrian survey and systematic shovel testing. The goals of the survey were to locate, document, and assess the National Register eligibility of historic properties located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Within the proposed project corridor, no archaeological resources were identified. Consequently, it is concluded that the implementation of GDOT Project BRSLB-1820(3), Lincoln County, would not effect cultural resources on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
