Abstract

This report documents results of a cultural resource assessment survey performed by Greenhouse Consultants Incorporated in conjunction with its PaleoWest affiliate of approximately 17.9 acres in Coweta County, Georgia. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) for this survey consists of a 100-meter (m) buffer around an intermittent stream. The buffer was limited to the boundaries of Parcel IDs 088 2069 001, 088 2060 010, and 088 2060 005, on the south side of Georgia State Route 16 (GA-16) east of Interstate 85 (I-85) (Coweta County Board of Tax Assessors & Appraisal Office 2022).

The purpose of this survey was to locate and identify historic properties within the APE and to assess the significance of such properties with respect to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria in 36 CFR 60, National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The survey was completed in accordance with federal and state regulations, and it was undertaken to comply with the Georgia Standards and Guidelines for Archaeological Investigations provided by the Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists (Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists [GCPA] 2019).

Shovel test pits (STP) were pre-plotted within the APE at 30-meter intervals spaced 30 meters apart, with pedestrian survey transects of low probability areas plotted at a spacing of 90 meters. The Greenhouse Consultants team plotted and excavated a total of 44 STP. Five STP were positive for cultural material, representing two newly recorded archaeological sites. Pedestrian survey was conducted along the transects throughout the APE. The pedestrian survey identified a newly recorded historical bridge.

Resource 9CW486 is a newly documented archaeological site located within the APE. The site consists of a small assemblage of Precontact lithics and ceramic sherds. Because the site could not be fully delineated outside the APE, the Greenhouse Consultants team recommends the site status as Indeterminate due to Insufficient Information. The potential of the portion of the site within the APE has been exhausted, and therefore no additional work or avoidance is recommended within this portion of the APE.

Resource 9CW487 is a newly documented archaeological site located within the APE. The site consists of a very small assemblage of Precontact lithics. The Greenhouse Consultants team documented the resource and recommends that it is not eligible for the NRHP.

Resource 9CW488 is a newly documented historical bridge located within the APE. The bridge appears to date from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. The Greenhouse Consultants team documented the resource and recommends that it is not eligible for the NRHP.

This survey established that the undertaking should have no adverse effects on sites eligible for the NRHP. The Greenhouse Consultants team recommends no additional archaeological investigation within the APE.
