Abstract

A cultural resources field survey and inventory has been completed on 210 acres in the Cohutta Ranger District for the Muddy Branch timber sale in Murray County, Georgia. These ten units are within Compartments 749 and 751. Field surveys were completed during April 1996 as part of the general Forest cultural resources inventory and survey prior to decisions on ground disturbing activities. Four sites were found, and three are recommended for protection and avoidance and are potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. These three sites to protect are outside the present timber sale boundary. One site is determined not eligible for the National Register and no further work or protection is recommended. These projects are directed towards identifying and recording cultural resource properties, both prehistoric and historic in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the USDA Forest Service Southern Region Programmatic Agreement, and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia SHPO, and NEPA.
