Abstract

The Dyar site consists of a large platform mound and associated village located in the floodplain of the Oconee River just west of the city of Greensboro, Georgia. Specifically, the site is located at Universal Transverse Mercator grid coordinates N3720024 E288888.

At the time that the excavations began, the site was situated in an area consisting of mixed hardwood forest, swamp, and abandoned fields. The river borders the site to the north and east, while an extensive swamp borders the site to the southwest. A creek flows through this swamp, probably an abandoned river channel, to the river, from southwest to northeast.

The most prominent feature of the site, the mound (Figure 1), is a truncated cone approximately 52m in diameter at the base, and 10.3m in height. The upper portions of the mound had been severely disturbed at some time in the past. This disturbance revealed two occupation floors in profile (DePratter 1976:80).
