Abstract

Data recovery efforts were conducted from November 15 to December 9, 1994, on site 9C0352, located in Cobb County, Georgia, by Garrow & Associates, Inc., on behalf of the Cobb County Department of Transportation. The data recovery efforts described in this report fulfill the stipulations of the Memorandum of Agreement entered into between the Cobb County Board of Commissioners and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in October 1994, to mitigate the adverse effect that construction of the Barrett Parkway Extension would have on the site. In-place preservation of the site was not possible, making data recovery the only viable means of mitigation. The data recovery efforts at 9C0352 involved the hand excavation of a 30 foot segment of the entrenchment that had been filled after the 1864 military actions around Kennesaw Mountain and examination of a 75 x 150 foot area south of the entrenchment. The excavation was designed to investigate questions regarding military practices involved in the construction of field fortifications and to attempt to delineate the location of the campsites associated with the entrenchment. Completion of the excavations and submission of this report fulfill the Section 106 compliance requirements and the stipulations of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the mitigation of site 9C0352. Other components of the mitigation, also performed by Garrow & Associates, Inc., are the HAER recordation of a railroad culvert and a summary of this data recovery report for popular consumption.
