Abstract

An archaeological survey was conducted by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. in Floyd County, Georgia, along the proposed South Rome By-Pass running east from US 27/SR 1 and along Booze Mountain Road to SR 101 (Figure 1). The corridor is 6.3 km (3.9 mi) long and 73 m (240 ft) in width. The survey also included three proposed access roads approximately 120 m (400 ft) long and 30 m (100 ft) in width. Fieldwork was conducted over 6 person-days between August 30 and September 1, 1993. All high probability areas (any area with < 15% slope) along the proposed right-of-way were shovel tested on a 30 m interval. Low probability areas (areas with > 15 % slope) were surface inspected and randomly shovel tested. Sites were tested with a 10 m or 20 m interval shovel testing pattern. Surface survey and the excavation of 116 shovel tests resulted in locating two previously unrecorded prehistoric sites (Table 1; Figure 1). Both sites are recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places due to sparsity of artifacts, disturbance from grading or erosion, and likelihood that the sites will provide little additional, substantial information as the result of further investigations.
