An archeological survey was conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation south of Milledgeville, Georgia, on a 460 acre tract bisected by the Oconee River. Three alternative routes of the Fall Line Freeway cross the survey area, and the goal of the survey was to locate all archeological sites within the block, and to determine if the road could be designed to avoid significant or potentially significant archeological sites. Twenty-four archeological sites and six artifact occurrences were found by the survey; 14 of the sites are potentially significant but require additional testing to determine if they are eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (Table 1). The alternative road location that crosses the middle of the survey area will not impact any significant sites. From an archeological viewpoint this should be the preferred alternative, although it is recognized that other factors, such as wetlands protection, must be considered in the final design.
