Abstract

This report is a compilation of two cultural resource surveys plus previously unrecorded sites that were reported during Fiscal Year 1996. The two surveys were conducted prior to the Hitchiti thinning project (50 acres) in northwestern Jones County, recording one new site; and the Town Creek Trail Loop B construction project (64 acres) in northern Greene County, which recorded 13 sites. In addition 10 previously unrecorded sites are reported here, ranging from prehistoric campsites to historic period farmsteads. Many of these sites were located during non-survey projects such as public relations cuttings and monitoring operations. Others were recorded earlier in the year and are reported here in full. Out of the 24 sites reported here, 10 sites are considered potentially eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (9GE6, 9GE8, 9PM1070, 9PM1072, 9PM1073, 9GE1623, 9GE1624, 9PM1074, 9JA291, 9JO229); 14 are not eligible for the National Register (9PM1069, 9JO228, 9PM1071, 9GE7, 9GE1625, 9GE1626, 9GE1627, 9GE1628, 9GE1629, 9GE1630, 9GE1631, 9GE1632, 9GE1633, 9GE1634). In addition, 11 ineligible isolated finds were recorded. The 10 potentially eligible sites will be protected in place by avoidance. The projects will have no effect on the potentially eligible sites in the project areas. In addition, site 9GE7 will be protected for its interpretive potential.
