Abstract

This report summarizes a cultural resources survey of Oglethorpe Power Corporation's (OPC) proposed Kirkland 230/25 kV substation on the south side of Kirkland Road in northwestern Newton County, Georgia. The 6 ha (15 ac) project area is about 5.5 km northwest of the city of Porterdale, and just to the east of Beaverdam Creek. The survey was undertaken to ensure that OPC is in compliance with federal regulations governing the disposition of cultural resources (archeological and historic sites). The survey included a background and literature search, surface inspection, and the excavation of 29 shovel tests. One site, a small subsurface scatter of historic artifacts, was identified within the project area. This site, 9NE47, is recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places due to its limited research potential. Therefore, the proposed construction of the substation will not affect any archeological sites of significance.
