Abstract

In November 1996, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted a cultural resources survey of the proposed Parker Road/ Flat Shoals Road intersection improvement corridor in Rockdale County, Georgia. Project goals included background research, archaeological and architectural field survey, and evaluation of all cultural resources within or adjacent to the proposed corridor. Background research conducted at the Georgia State Archaeological Site Files in Athens found no previously recorded archaeological sites in the proposed corridor. Research conducted at the Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Natural Resources did not locate any structures nominated to or listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No historic structures (i.e., more than 50 years old) were located within or adjacent to the proposed corridor. Most of the project area north of Flat Shoals Road is recent industrial construction and the rest is devoid of standing structures exceeding fifty years of age. One historic cemetery, 9R0125, is located approximately 15 meters north of the proposed road widening beginning point. The cemetery is currently located 3 meters outside of the existing pavement. If the cemetery can be avoided, then no further cultural resources work is recommended for the proposed corridor improvements.
