Abstract

A cultural resource inventory and field survey was completed for the proposed land exchange of four tracts in Gilmer and Murray Counties. Three adjacent tracts make up the Gallman exchange parcel for 480 acres in Gilmer County. And one land lot is proposed in Murray County near Fort Mountain State Park. These tracts will be exchanged for various private tracts within the National Forest boundary. The Gallman exchange is on the southern end of the district along Owltown Creek below Walnut Mountain. Four sites were found and are recommended as ineligible for the National Register. Two artifact occurrences were also found and these are not eligible either. The Fort Mountain Tract is a single 160 acre tract adjacent to the Fort Mountain State Park in Murray County. No sites were found in this tract. No significant cultural resources will be impacted by the exchange of these parcels. It is recommended that these land exchanges take place. These projects are directed towards identifying and recording cultural resource properties, both prehistoric, and historic, in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the USDA Forest Service Southern Region Programmatic Agreement, and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia SHP0, and NEPA.
