Abstract

During the months of October and November, 1994 New South Associates conducted a 16 mile survey of U.S. Highway 25/SR 121 in Burke and Richmond counties. A total of 12 sites and six isolated finds were located along the Widening Existing alternate. Site types included: nineteenth and twentieth century house sites, prehistoric and historic artifact scatters, and isolated finds. Survey of the New Alignment-West alternate was conducted March 13, 1995. No sites were recorded during the alternate survey. Two sites, 9RI1036 and 9BB58, are recommended as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. These sites are recommended for avoidance, or if avoidance is not possible, then data recovery. Site 9BK358 is a historic site in Burke County. This site is associated with building Bk-9, recorded in the architectural survey of the highway alignment conducted by New South Associates (Kehoe and O'Steen 1995). Site 9RI1036, a historic site associated with building Ri-286, is located in Richmond County. Both of these sites contain standing buildings or ruins, and both produced artifacts in unplowed contexts and have had limited site disturbance compared with other sites identified in the survey corridor. The remainder of the sites discovered during the survey are determined ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. This report details the background, methods, and results of this project, as well as management recommendations for the two sites determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
