Abstract

An archaeological survey and site evaluation was conducted in Dougherty County, Georgia. The survey area includes 118 acres located on property owned by Georgia Power Company; this land is part of the Flint River Hydroelectric Project. The need for the archaeological investigation was prompted by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) relicensing requirements (Project #1218). Field investigations and background research identified nine archaeological sites within the study area; two of these sites (9DU37 and 9DU38) were previously recorded and have been recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Two sites, 9DU85 (the Muckafoonee Creek Steam Plant) and 9DU86 (the Muckafoonee Creek Hydroelectric Plant), are historic sites associated with hydro-power development in the region. Site 9DU85 is recommended eligible for the NRHP; site 9DU86 is recommended ineligible for the NRHP. The remaining sites are associated with prehistoric occupations. Three of these sites (9DU83, 9DU84, and 9DU88) have been severely impacted by past land development and erosion, and are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. The remaining two sites, 9DU80 and 9DU87, have areas indicating intact deposits and are recommended eligible for the NRHP. No historic structures, other than those discussed herein or in Gardner and Sutherland (1996) are present in the study area.
