Abstract

In September 1996, Brockington and Associates, Inc. performed an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed 30 acre Riverside Park in Columbia County, Georgia. The survey was sponsored by South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE&G), under the auspices of the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee (FERC). The work was conducted to fulfill the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's Regulations for Compliance with Section 106, codified at 36 CFR Part 800. Background research conducted prior to field survey found no previously recorded archaeological sites or National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligible properties in the project area. The field survey found no archaeological sites, but recorded two archaeological isolates; these are not considered significant resources. No further archaeological work is recommended within the proposed corridor. It is recommended that all needed construction permits required be granted.
