Abstract

New South Associates conducted Phase I archaeological and historic architectural surveys of work space locations along the North Georgia Extension replacement of the Transcontinental gas pipeline January 28, 1997. The nine work space locations lie along the Transcontinental gas pipeline beginning near Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County and running roughly southeast to Highway 78 in Walton County. No archaeological sites or historic properties were discovered by the survey and no further study is recommended. Phase I archaeological and historic architectural surveys of two compressor station sites was conducted by New South Associates on February 4, 5, and 12, 1997. The two approximately 20 acre tracts lie in Coweta County, west of Newnan, along the Transcontinental gas pipeline. No archaeological or historic properties were discovered by the survey and no further study is recommended. Finally, two approximately six acre tracts were also subjected to archaeological and historic architectural survey. The addition to compressor station #125 is located northeast of the city of Monroe, Walton County, on the Transcontinental gas pipeline and was surveyed February 12, 1997. The tract to be used as a contractor's yard and pipe yard is located on the north side of Hog Mountain Road in Barrow County. No archaeological or historic properties were discovered in the study areas by this survey. However, two historic structures lie adjacent to the Barrow County tract. Neither structure is considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and therefore no historic viewsheds will be affected.
