Abstract

This Phase I survey was performed by Garrow & Associates, Inc. under contract with Chambers Development Company, Inc. in order to identify any cultural resources situated within the proposed Banks County landfill site on Carlan Creek in Banks County, Georgia. All identified cultural resources were assessed under the Criteria For Evaluation (National Register Branch 1991:37). The field survey was performed from September 17 to September 24, 1993 by the Field Director and three Archaeological Technicians. The property consists of 516 acres and was surveyed by both visual inspection and systematic shovel testing at 30 m intervals. Results of the survey yielded a total of 21 identified archaeological sites: 12 are prehistoric, 4 are historic, 5 have both prehistoric and historic components. A total of 12 sites is recommended for Phase II testing in order to assess eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
