Abstract

In December of 1996, a literature review and an archeological resources survey was conducted for the Lakewood Avenue Bridge Replacement Site in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. Based on the survey, much of the proposed corridor has been severely impacted by recent construction, paving and other ground modifications. One historic sherd scatter and late 19th/early 20th century bridge abutments were observed. These resources were recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places since it is unlikely that additional research would yield significant data. The Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Natural Resources has concurred with this recommendation. Therefore, no further cultural resources work is recommended for these areas. One significant resource was identified in the project area. The literature review indicated the presence of a late 19th/early 20th century trolley line (Site 9FU324) beneath Lakewood Avenue although no physical evidence was observed during the survey. Evaluation conducted in December 1997 and January 1998 revealed the presence of two sets of tracks dating to the mid-1920s and the possible remnants of an earlier set of tracks. Research indicates that the trolley line played a significant role in the late 19th/early 20th century communities along Lakewood Avenue. Given the findings of the evaluation, the Lakewood Avenue trolley line is recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. No further fieldwork is recommended since the evaluation extensively documented a section of the tracks. It is likely that additional work in the area of the bridge replacement site would yield redundant data.
