Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project IM-185-1(326), Muscogee County, was surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The Department of Transportation proposes to reconstruct the I-185 interchange at US 27/SR 1 in Muscogee County. The improvement will reconstruct the existing full cloverleaf interchange to add a directional ramp from US 27/SR 1 eastbound to 1-185 northbound. Also, the proposed project would include minor alignment adjustments to the remaining ramps to improve operational efficiency and accommodate the new directional ramp. An archaeological survey of approximately 5.63 hectares (13.93 acres) of additional required right-of-way from within the Fort Benning Military Installation was required under the provisions of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. A permit to conduct the survey was acquired on January 8, 1998 (ARPA Permit No. FBGA-98-05); the archaeological survey was conducted on January 27 and 28, 1996. Also, included under the provisions of ARPA Permit No. FBGA-98-05 was Fort Benning Military Installation property located within the 1-185 existing right-of-way beginning at US 27/SR 1 then continuing northerly for approximately 1.28 kilometers (0.8 mile). in addition, approximately 3.78 hectares (9.35 acres) of privately held property was surveyed as part of the project. The archaeological survey consisted of an intensive pedestrian survey and systematic shovel testing. The goals of the survey were to locate, document, and assess the National Register eligibility of archaeological properties located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. No archaeological resources were identified within the proposed project corridor. Therefore, it is concluded that implementation of GDOT Project IM-185-1(326), Muscogee County, would not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
