Abstract

This report summarizes a cultural resources survey of Georgia Transmission Corporation's (GTC) proposed Mulberry Grove 230/25 kV substation on the northwest side of State Route 315 in southwestern Harris County, Georgia. The substation will be placed on a 6.5 ha (16 ac) tract that is about 1 km northeast of the crossroads community of Mulberry Grove and about 3.5 kin south of Mulberry Creek. This 6.5 ha tract is the area of potential effect for the project. The survey was undertaken to ensure that GTC is in compliance with federal regulations governing the disposition of archeological and historic sites that might be affected by a federally licensed or permitted project. The survey included a background and literature search, surface inspection, and the excavation of 15 shovel tests. Two sites, one a small surface scatter of historic artifacts and the other a sparse prehistoric lithic scatter, were identified within the project area. Both sites are recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places due to their limited research potential and failure to meet National Register criteria. Therefore, the proposed construction of the substation will not affect any significant archeological sites. No further work is recommended.
