Abstract

Archeological testing was conducted at the New Echota State Historic Site (96061) in two areas adjacent to the Museum that are proposed for the construction of a new restroom and drain field. The work was performed by Southern Research for the Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in late October and early November, 1993. Ten 1 x 1 m test pits were excavated in the proposed new restroom area and 23 1 x 1 m test pits were excavated in the new drain field area. The restroom area exhibited disturbance from the construction of museum while the drain field area contained no significant cultural features or materials. Artifact density was low and those artifacts recovered were highly fragmented. Early to middle nineteenth century ceramics were found in both areas, but they were very small and eroded. It was recommended that there were no significant cultural remains that would be impacted by the proposed construction.
