Abstract

As a final phase of study, an intensive cultural resources survey was conducted on the west end of the proposed Cobb County East-West Connector. First, a reconnaissance survey of a 30 - 40 acre tract was conducted adjacent to Concord Road and Nickajack Creek close to significant known historic sites. No additional significant resources were recorded. To avoid these known resources, a 1.5 mi segment of road was re-routed and is the main subject of this report. Three previously unrecorded archeological/historical sites were documented. 9CO359 and 9CO360 are house sites that date to the first half of the twentieth century. Both are recommended as ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places due to low research potential. The third site, 9CO3, appears to date to the first half of the nineteenth century and may have been destroyed by military activity in 1864. Due to the severe modem disturbance the site has poor integrity and is recommended as ineligible to the NRHP. Also, it lies entirely outside the proposed road corridor and will suffer no direct effects from construction.
