Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. surveyed a portion of Watson Mill Bridge State Park. The project, a Phase II survey, was conducted for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The archeological survey was conducted in a wooded area near the park entrance in Oglethorpe County where a proposed office/visitor center, parking lot and access road are planned. Shovel testing and a test pit (1x1 m) were excavated in and near the proposed construction area. Only five of 36 shovel tests contained artifacts (all historic). Artifact density was extremely low and no subsurface features were encountered. The proposed construction area, therefore, does not contain significant archeological remains. Construction of the proposed facilities will not cause any adverse impacts to cultural resources and should be allowed to proceed.
