Abstract

This details the initial results of a reconnaissance level cultural resources survey of the proposed Athens Heritage Trail and Oconee River Greenway. The survey included a background and literature review, the examination of old maps and aerial photographs, and two person-days of fieldwork. Goals of the survey were to gather information about the types of archeological remains that could be expected within the project boundaries, and to identify the location of obvious structural remains or features. This information in turn will be used during the final design process to minimize potential damage to archeological or historical remains, and to identify areas that need additional survey before construction is undertaken. The northern boundary of the Heritage Trail project is North Avenue, while the southern boundary is Oconee Hills Cemetery. The east and west boundaries are not well defined at this time, but will probably correspond to greenspace, bordered by roads or natural features such as Trail Creek. The Heritage Trail is the centerpiece for the much more extensive Oconee River Greenway, which will stretch from Sandy Creek Park southward to the confluence of the North Oconee and Middle Oconee Rivers below Whitehall. Combined, the two projects are nearly eight miles.
