Abstract

This report summarizes the results of the archeological and historical study of a portion of a Civil War battlefield and trench system located in western Cobb County, Georgia, about 7 mi west of Marietta. The battle occurred on June 15-17, 1864, along a line nearly 8 mi (10.2 km) long. The fighting was associated with the campaign for Atlanta, which came fairly late in the Civil War. The study was sponsored by Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) prior to the construction of a new transmission line and substation. OPC recognized the historical significance of Confederate earthworks which will be affected by development. Construction will seriously disturb approximately 140 linear meters (459.31 ft) of Confederate trenches at three separate locations. The most extensive segments were located partially on and immediately adjacent to the site of the "Battle of Gilgal Church".
