Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation and Greene County are proposing to widen, and partially realign Linger Longer Road and Reubens Ridge Road, both of which will provide access to a new Ritz-Carlton Lodge on Lake Oconee. A 500 ft (152 m) wide corridor, 6.7 km (4.2 mi) long, was surveyed. A total of 39 archeological resources are within, or very close to, the study corridor. Twelve of these sites were located during a previous survey (Ledbetter 1998a). Only one, 9GE903, was recommended eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Archeological data recovery is currently being conducted at this site prior to construction of the lodge. Following review of the earlier report by archeologists working for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division, and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, none of the other previously recorded sites were determined eligible to the Register. Of the 23 newly recorded sites, 19 are ineligible for listing in the NRHP due to poor integrity and/or low research potential. At the survey level, definitive eligibility statements could not be formulated for the remaining four sites, 9GE1829, 9GE1832, 9GE1838 and 9GE1842. Additional study, consisting of the excavation of more shovel tests, small test pits, and archival research is recommended for these sites. In the meantime, these resources should be protected from all forms of damage including road widening, timber harvesting, residential construction, etc. Pertinent management information is listed below in geographic order from west to east.
