Abstract

In August 1999, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted a cultural resources inventory of the West Point Plantation Tract, Glynn County, Georgia for Torras Properties, St. Simons Island, Georgia. Archaeological investigations involved systematic shovel testing of the 60 hectare tract. This work was conducted in compliance with federal regulations concerning the management of cultural resources affected through permitted development activities. The cultural resources inventory resulted in the identification of one archaeological site (9GN274) and three isolated finds (Isolates 1-3). Site 9GN274 is a multi-component site containing the remains of prehistoric Middle Woodland and Mississippian activity areas, a single protohistoric artifact, and a late eighteenth/early nineteenth century activity area. The low density of artifacts and the lack of any associated cultural features encountered at 9GN274 and Isolates 1-3 suggests that these deposits can contribute no significant information to the interpretation of the past use of the project tract or region. Therefore, they are recommended not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Further management consideration of these cultural resources is not recommended. Proposed land disturbing activities in or near 9GN274 or Isolates 1-3 will not impact any significant cultural resources and should be allowed to proceed as planned.
