Abstract

Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted archaeological resources survey and site evaluation of proposed corridor widening and new location segments of US 27/SR 1 in Troup and Heard Counties, Georgia in August 1999. The total length of the proposed corridor is 1.00 mile; widening and new location segments are 200 to 250 feet wide. The purpose of the survey was to locate archaeological resources within the proposed corridor and to make National Register of Historic Places (NR-HP) eligibility recommendations. Portions of the proposed corridor extend across US Army Corps of Engineers property (Mobile District), requiring an Archaeological Resources Protection Act permit (ARPA Permit No. DACWO 1-4-99-146). The work was conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation, in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. Archaeological survey recorded no new sites, but provided additional information on three previously recorded sites (9HE 123, 9HE 124, and 9HE201). These three sites were evaluated for NRHP eligibility. The three recorded sites are prehistoric ceramic and lithic artifact scatters. These sites have been disturbed by grading and erosion, exhibit no additional research potential, and are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. No significant archaeological resources will be affected by the proposed highway project. This project should be granted archaeological resources clearance.
