Abstract

On June 9, 1999 an archeological survey was conducted at the existing Windward Parkway/SR 400 interchange in northern Fulton County. In order to facilitate traffic flow, the interchange is scheduled for improvements such as constructing new turn lanes, a bike lane and sidewalk, and replacement of bridges over Windward Parkway. The survey confirmed that the most of the proposed improvements are within the existing rights-of-way for SR 400 and Windward Road, and that the adjacent terrain has been greatly modified by urbanization and landscaping. Only one area, a small knoll on the southwest side of the interchange, had any potential for containing intact topography or archeological sites. Shovel testing revealed that this landform has been graded to subsoil. No archeological sites exist within the proposed project's boundaries. Therefore, construction will not adversely impact any significant cultural resources and the project should be allowed to proceed.
